Late last year, two little black and brown puppies were seen wandering in between traffic in Nixa, Missouri. One narrowly missed being hit by a car. A passerby was able to pull over and coax one of the puppies, a boy, close enough to catch. The other, a girl, was much more difficult. After some time, and a treat he happened to find in his car, the puppy finally got close enough to pick up and put in the car. Once they were safe, he was able to really see the condition the puppies were in. It was heartbreaking. They were terribly skinny with ribs and hipbones poking out. They had sores in their fur, and were both very frightened.
A foster family took the puppies into their home and cared for them for weeks. It took a lot of love and patience to build trust with the abused puppies. At first, just being picked up was a very traumatic experience for them. However, Jack and Ember, as they came to be called, proved resilient. It wasn't long before good food and medicine for their skin began to have a positive effect. Jack and Ember showed that they wanted to love as much as to be loved. Too soon it was time to find the puppies permanent homes. Through a pet-loving network of friends, both puppies soon had forever families.
Ember is now surrounded by love in her Springfield home with the Young family. She has great new parents, Melissa and Victor, and their daughters, Aleah and Sierra. She also has a playmate, Ashley, the Young's first dog. "Ashley is very protective of Ember and they play together constantly," Melissa says. Even though Ember has Ashley to play with, her heart belongs to Aleah. "Ember is definitely Aleah's dog", Victor tells TAME.
Jack's new home is with Donnie Rodgers, C-Street Community Development Coordinator for the UDA. It seems that Jack wants to make sure everyone gets the attention he himself lacked in his early puppy days. "Jack loves people," says Donnie. "When we play fetch, he makes sure no one gets left out. He has to take the ball to everyone." Donnie looks forward to taking Jack to area events where dogs are welcome.
