Proper nutrition, plenty of rest and a ton of love can go a long way when raising a young animal. However, another key ingredient to raising a well behaved, friendly pet is socialization. Proper socialization is a life-long process but is most important with young pets. It includes introducing pets to other pets, people, children, new places, sights, sounds, and situations. Young animals are like sponges, they absorb everything that goes on around them. The experiences they have can have a lasting impression on them.
How to socialize your pet? Pack yourself a baggy of treats and hit the road. Experts say to start off in smaller quieter situations and gradually work up to bigger, louder situations. Immediately reward your animal when they behave appropriately and correct them when they act inappropriately. The easiest way to socialize your pet (if you can) is to take your animal everywhere you go. Remember the ultimate goal is to be able to take them everywhere you want and have them remain calm and collected. Another good way to socialize your pet, while also receiving basic training, is to enroll your pet in an obedience class. Classes can benefit animals of all ages and promotes the bond between owner and pet.
Whether you're introducing your new puppy to the kids next door or to another dog at the pet store, be very cautious and attentive to what you pet's body language is saying. Try to make the introduction as calm and stress free as possible. Never force your pet into an awkward first meeting because it may have negative consequences on them. If your pet becomes scared or aggressive, remove them from the situation and try again a little later. Consistence is key here! The more they see it and are around it, the more familiar and comfortable they will!
