Spring is an exciting time for the Titanic Museum in Branson - they now have two furry new reasons to come to the attraction. They have added dogs to the show! History tells us there were dogs aboard the ship, so the owners wanted to pay tribute to these animals. The dogs will also be a part of an educational program for children.
After a full year of training, the Titanic is ready to announce the arrival of Molly and Carter. Molly and Carter are King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, one of the breeds present on the Titanic when it sank in 1812. Most days, visitors to the Titanic will be able to meet Molly and Carter. They will be on hand to greet visitors when the horn sounds.
TAME asks Allye
"What fun ‘animal' places do you recommend visiting this spring?"
"The Titanic Museum! They have dogs now!"
Hi TAME Friends! I got the awesome opportunity to meet Molly and Carter, the Titanic's newest additions. I sat down with their trainer, Matt Matney and learned some very interesting things about their training and how they came to be part of the museum.
A: First, Matt where are you from and how long have you been a trainer?
M: I am from Kentucky and have been a professional trainer for 13 years.
A: Did you help decide what breed of dog was selected to be part of the Titanic Museum?
M: Yes, I was called on to help with this important decision.
A: Why did you select King Charles Cavalier Spaniels?
M: To stay historically accurate we wanted to choose a breed that was aboard the ship and also, these dogs have laid back personalities and are a very approachable type of dog.
A: How old are Molly and Carter?
M: Molly and Carter are 1 ½ years old.
A: How did they get their names?
M: Molly is named after the unsinkable Molly Brown who was born in Hannibal, Missouri (for more about Molly Brown visit www.mollybrown.org). Carter is named the Carter family who were passengers aboard the Titanic and actually had King Charles Cavalier Spaniels traveling with them.
A: Were they easy to train?
M: This breed by nature is very laid back, so motivation was the only challenge I really had with them. Molly was the easiest to train, Carter was harder. They both love to lick ice cubes as a treat.
Imagine that! The dogs of the Titanic love ice-cubes. How funny! I enjoyed meeting everyone at the Titanic so much. I can't wait to visit them at the museum this spring.
