"A Mutt? A Mix? A Who Knows What!" (Fall 2009 issue)Sicily was dumped in a wire chicken cage at a shelter and left there. In fact, they didn't even see her until the end of the day. I looked at literally every dog in Springfield - every rescue/shelter. When I got to the last rescue, the last dog - there was Sicily playing out back. She was perfect - age, breed, size, etc. I took her home that day. I wanted to do the DNA test because I'm always interested in my dog's background and history. I was shocked at her results and even called to make sure they didn't mix up her results with another dog! Whatever the breed - Sicily is the perfect mix!

"Ca-Ca-Ca-Cat Scratch Fever!" (Winter 09/10 issue)
One of many articles that caught and kept my interest involved illnesses we can contract from our pets. Regarding toxoplasmosis, it is indeed true that pregnant women are very susceptible to the condition, due to contact with cat feces and uncooked meats. As an individual who works in the field of HIV care, I would also add that individuals living with HIV/AIDS are also highly susceptible to toxo, which can have devastating effects on an already-weakened immune system. I've known and worked with many HIV+ people, who are also pet enthusiasts (pets are a healthy source of support and companionship) and wish them good health as I help educate them and the greater Ozarks community.

"Gifts That Give" (Winter 09/10 issue)
Just picked up the winter issue, great as always! I really enjoyed the article Gifts that Give! If you ever do this kind of article again you may want to add www.TheAnimalRescueSite.com If you haven't heard of it you should check it out! They have all kinds of fun gifts and they do so much good for animals! I did a lot of Christmas shopping there this year! You can also visit the site each day and click to donate food to animals in shelters!

I just picked up a copy of your magazine at my vet. I had no idea such a magazine existed. Kudos. I look all the time for toys made in the USA for my precious dogs and it is a huge bonus when the company gives back to the rescue community, so I was glad to see your two pages of such companies.
I have found one that I really like and I think after reading your articles you would be interested. It is www.helpingudders.com. My two dogs LOVE the toys and the bonus is they give to rescues, either your choice or theirs. I am so concerned with quality control of additives or items made outside of the US. This company is a great resource.
